installation of a 5000 l per day greywater-recycling-system (GWI 5.2-5.000)
The Hotel Glar Conference & SPA in Wisełka (on the Polish Baltic coast) is a particularly compelling example of how modern greywater technology can be implemented within the sensitive ecosystem of a national park (Wolin).
In a hotel setting, the potential for greywater recycling is significantly higher than in office buildings, as showers and bathtubs generate much larger volumes of lightly soiled water. Hotel Glar is a pioneer on the Polish coast, as many older hotels in the region have not yet implemented a comparable separation of water streams.
Ecological Responsibility at the Edge of Wolin National Park
Given its proximity to the Wolin National Park, the construction of Hotel Glar placed a special emphasis on ecological independence and resource conservation.
1. Greywater Recycling in Hotel Operations
In a wellness hotel like the Glar, greywater is generated in large quantities, primarily from:
- Guest Rooms: Showers and washbasins.
- SPA Area: Wastewater from showers preceding the pool facilities.
How it works:
- Collection: Water from showers and sinks is diverted separately from “blackwater” (toilets and kitchens).
- Treatment: The greywater undergoes a biological-mechanical purification stage. Hotel Glar utilizes a system that operates without chemical additives to meet the strict environmental regulations of the national park.
- Reuse: The treated water is fed into a separate piping network. It is primarily used for toilet flushing throughout the entire hotel complex.
2. Synergies with the SPA and Landscaping
The hotel’s extensive SPA facilities and grounds offer further opportunities for efficiency:
- Irrigation: The green spaces surrounding the hotel are irrigated using a combination of recycled greywater and harvested rainwater.
- Heat Recovery: A standout feature of the modern systems implemented at the Glar is the recovery of heat from shower water. Before the greywater is treated, a heat exchanger extracts thermal energy from the wastewater (approx. 30–35°C) to preheat fresh service water. This results in massive energy savings for the SPA area’s water heating.
3. Ecological Significance for Wisełka
Wisełka is a small village with limited municipal infrastructure. Through its recycling system, Hotel Glar relieves pressure on:
- The Local Sewage Network: Significantly less wastewater needs to be pumped to the municipal treatment plant.
- Groundwater: The extraction of valuable potable water for garden irrigation and toilet flushing is minimized.
Benefits for the Guest
The system remains invisible to the guest but contributes to a “Green Wellness” experience. Toilet flushing functions as usual, while the hotel drastically reduces its ecological footprint near the Baltic Sea.
Hotel Glar proves that luxury tourism and environmental protection within a national park can exist in perfect harmony.
